Artist Statement – Joe Platko

A few inches of water is the entire distance between two worlds, and Joseph Platko has spent twenty years working at that line. Moving between the underwater world and the coastal landscape above with the same restless curiosity, he photographs these places because they’re gorgeous, and because no one knows to care until it’s in front of them. His eye draws from two directions: coastal photographers like Chuck Davis, Jason Bradley, and Ryuijie, for whom craft and tonal control are inseparable from the image, and the abstraction of Brett Weston, where natural detail is pressed until it turns into pure form. From Hiroshige and Eyvind Earle comes a sense of design, water and weather rendered as pattern and the rhythm of repeating form.

Big Sur gives none of it up easily. The coast demands hard entries, extensive training, and conditions that are often simply unworkable, so for most people, these images are nearly impossible to make. What the work asks in return is patience, and a kind of listening: to the hum of the surf, the whispering of the mountains, and the murmurs of the tides.
